Pivac to succeed Gatland as Wales coach

Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac walks with Leigh Halfpenny

Wayne Pivac has been appointed as the new Wales Rugby team head coach.

Wales have done that before with Graham Henry, Steve Hansen and Warren Gatland, but with the appointment of Wayne Pivac yesterday, they hope that they have the best of both worlds - a head coach with the rugby intellect of one born and bred in New Zealand, who has recent, intimate experience of the Welsh game.

55-year-old Pivac previously coached Fiji between 2004 and 2007.

The Scarlets boss will take over when Gatland steps down after the 2019 Six Nations and the Rugby World Cup in Japan, and will remain at Scarlets for the entirety of next season.

"I am obviously from New Zealand but I don't feel like an outsider", Pivac said.

Pivac will spend a fifth campaign in charge of the Scarlets next season before joining the WRU in July 2019.

Gatland said the early announcement would remove the distraction of his tenure heading into the World Cup. Wales finished fourth in the 2011 Rugby World Cup and were beaten quarterfinalists in 21015.

Gatland is a two-time British and Irish Lions head coach, winning one series in Australia and tying with the All Blacks past year.

"We have secured the best man for the job and we have done so rigorously and decisively to the collective benefit of all involved in Welsh rugby", said Phillips. "The handover process is something we will plan carefully and commence in detail next summer".

Pivac, a former Auckland policeman, was chosen ahead of fellow Kiwis Dave Rennie and Scott Robinson, who were also on the shortlist for the post.

May says Brexit plan delivers ‘people’s vote’
This could mean Brexit being delayed, a change of government or a second referendum, he said . Gove told British television station ITV he was "absolutely not" planning to resign.

Pivac has enjoyed notable success with the Scarlets, winning the Pro12 in 2017 before reaching the final - and the last four of the European Champions Cup - in 2018.

"When I first came to Wales, I was totally focused on doing a role on the Scarlets, knowing that if that went well, that would hopefully lead to something else".

"I had a taste of worldwide rugby with Fiji and thoroughly enjoyed that". So clearly for me it was a matter of how would I fit in in Wales outside of rugby.

"From the day I left Fiji rugby I wanted to have another opportunity to do it".

"I think the Union's in good hands and I want to be part of it".
