Starbucks, citing ocean threat, is ditching plastic straws

Starbucks citing environment is ditching plastic straws

While straws have become a high-profile issue, they make up only about 4% of the plastic trash by number of pieces, and far less by weight.

The company said it will make a strawless lid available at 8,000 stores in the USA and Canada for certain drinks.

The coffee giant said Monday that it will replace the ubiquitous plastic straw with recyclable "strawless lids", as well as straws made from biodegradable materials, as part of a no-plastic-straws movement that has gained momentum in recent years.

Frappuccino drinks will still be served with dome lids, but with straws made from paper or compostable plastic.

It earned $ 29 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $504 million and its worldwide haul to $773 million. The movie takes place two years after Captain America: Civil War and a few days prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War .

"This is a significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways", Kevin Johnson, president and chief executive of Starbucks, said in a statement.

Starbucks will start rolling out strawless lids for all drinks in the fall.

Dozens of 'drunk' seagulls found on South West beaches
Brewery waste can also be used as a compost and feed, so narrowing down where the seagulls are guzzling the alcohol from is hard . Daniel did say the gulls they collected stank of alcohol and that their vans now smell pretty much like the local pubs.

The announcement from McDonald's followed an April proposal by the United Kingdom government to ban plastic straws in the country.

Say goodbye to plastic straws at Starbucks.

McDonald's recently said it would switch to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland by next year, and test alternatives to plastic straws in some US locations.

In the United States, local governments are already putting similar restrictions into place. Straws add up to about 2,000 tons of the almost nine million tons of plastic waste that ends up in the water each year. "We hope others will follow in [Starbucks'] footsteps".
