Tesla loses United States subsidies as it hits 200,000 sales mark

Since the credits apply when the purchase is completed, it appears that few, if any, buyers will be able to take advantage of the full $7,500 discount on this model.

That limit is based on how many deliveries of electric cars an automaker makes in the US.

When an automaker reaches 200,000 EV deliveries, the tax credits begin to phase out after one full quarter passes following the quarter in which the auto manufacturer has hit the 200,000-delivery mark. The credit is cut in half for vehicles delivered January 1 - June 30, 2019, then slashed again to $1,875 for deliveries from July 1 - December 31. However, the company has until now declined to comment on just how close to that threshold it has got.

Trump Says 'No Problem' In NATO, Touting Allies' Spending Pledges
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg cited a "new sense of urgency, and all allies agreed to redouble their efforts". Still, Trump has been more conciliatory behind the scenes, including at a leaders' dinner Wednesday.

It's another "first" for the automaker, but perhaps not one it would like. Starting next July, they can receive 25% of the credit. Vehicles delivered in 2020 and beyond will not be eligible.

The South African-born Tesla boss had already confirmed that the Performance variant will use a powertrain layout similar to the dual-motor Model 3, suggesting it will have a motor to drive each axle.

With the release of configurator emails for reservation holders and the rollout of programs such as test drives in selected stores, as well as a new 5-minute "Sign & Drive" delivery system, Tesla appears to have stopped anti-selling the Model 3.

Tesla boss Elon Musk has revealed more specifications for a 155mph all-wheel-drive Performance version of the Model 3 created to rival the BMW M3. That will mean the federal tax incentive for those new owners will be halved - and could, indeed, offset some of the appeal of not spending $9k on the bigger battery. Tesla's official website also included a table comparing the Model S favorably to the Model 3, both in features and in availability. There have certainly been plans suggested that might alter how the cap operates, or even introduce instant rebates or other incentives to further encourage EV adoption.
