Trump, after questioning May's Brexit plan, arrives in 'hot spot' Britain

President Donald Trump will get the red-carpet treatment on his brief visit to Britain beginning today: military bands at a gala dinner, lunch with the prime minister at her country residence and tea with the queen at Windsor Castle before flying off to one of his golf clubs in Scotland.

Russia, Brexit and the Middle East are set to top the agenda.

LONDON ― President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump touch down in London on Thursday for a working visit, and while his meeting schedule will keep him nearly exclusively outside of the capital, she will be spending some time in town.

On Thursday, Trump will travel to Blenheim Palace, the 18th-century stately home where Britain's World War Two leader Winston Churchill was born and spent most of his childhood.

"Now more than ever we have a responsibility to stand up for our values and ensure our voice is heard around the world", he wrote in London's Evening Standard newspaper.

Trump was flying over after a fraught North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels where he piled pressure on allies to double their defence spending.

Macron said France, which previous year spent 1.8 percent on defence, would meet the target by the 2024 deadline. We'll have more on President Trump , NATO, Russia and the protests in the United Kingdom after headlines.

Earlier Mr Trump described the United Kingdom as "a pretty hot spot right now with a lot of resignations". "With a lot of resignations", Trump told a news conference before leaving for London. Some Brexit supporters cast it as a betrayal, including lawmakers in her own deeply-divided party who have warned of a leadership challenge.

"The people voted to break it up [Britain's ties with the EU]", Trump said. "They agree with me on immigration".

There is more to the 20-feet high balloon caricature - which depicts the leader as an angry infant wearing a nappy and clutching a mobile phone - than mockery, demonstrator Sheila Menon said.

Trump, who has repeatedly praised Brexit, has expressed enthusiasm for a wide-ranging agreement with Britain after its European Union departure.

He said: "I would say Brexit is Brexit". Brexit creates "an opportunity to reach a free-trade agreement that creates jobs and growth here in the U.K. and right across the United States", Ms.

The convention-shredding president had ignored diplomatic niceties ahead of touching down for the four-day visit - his first to Britain since taking power - by rebuking his beleaguered host as she struggles over Brexit.

He claimed when he found them, they were both outside the auto , which had been left running. The incident is under investigation but police said it appeared to be an accident.

Trump has frequently angered British politicians: May criticised him for retweeting a message by a member of a British far-right group late a year ago.

On Saturday, Trump supporters will rally near the United States embassy in Nine Elms, south London, for an event titled "Welcoming Trump to Britain Rally - Make Britain Great Again", at which a number of right-wing figures are scheduled to speak.

After shaking hands, the Trumps and Mays turned to take in the scene.

USA allies played down Trump's suggestion he was responsible for increased defense spending.

Protesters gathered outside the entrance to Blenheim Palace ahead of the scheduled dinner. I think that " s why Brexit happened". More recently, a YouGov poll found that only 11% of Britons were fans of the president.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to protest against Trump's visit in central London on Friday, citing his alleged Islamophobia, controversial policies and "incendiary rhetoric" towards people with disabilities and the LGBTQ community.
