Trump says North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members have agreed to spending increases

US President Donald Trump and First Lady of the US Melania Trump arrive for a working dinner at The Parc du Cinquantenaire- Jubelpark Park in Brussels

"They're going to up it at levels that they've never thought of before".

"Throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart", the president tweeted.

Trump tweeted that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries "Must pay 2% of GDP IMMEDIATELY, not by 2025" and then rattled them further by privately suggesting member nations should spend 4 percent of their gross domestic product on defense - a bigger share than even the United States now pays, according to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation statistics. Reuters reported that the president told the stunned group that the USA 'would have to look to go its own way' if allies didn't raise their defence spending to 2% by January 2019 instead of by the 2024 target.

Hours later, he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met privately and discussed the pipeline, each reaffirming the partnership between the USA and Germany.

But it is also clear that Trump craves a different relationship with Moscow, predicting that the Putin meeting may be easier than any he held with his actual allies in Britain or Brussels.

In the same breath, he sounded a strongly conciliatory tone with the Russian leader despite the United States intelligence community's assessment that Putin not only meddled in the 2016 elections to help Trump but also continues his cyberwar efforts going into the 2018 mid-terms. But he did not rule out recognising Rissia's annexation of Crimea.

He vowed to bring up Syria and allegations of Russian meddling in the USA presidential elections, which his campaign is accused of colluding in.

Brock Lesnar Wrestling At WWE SummerSlam
The last time the Universal title changed hands was when Brock Lesnar defeated Goldberg at WrestleMania 33. I hate watching friends of mine fight. "You're not happy about anything so I'm not gonna do it".

He earlier infuriated Chancellor Angela Merkel by claiming Germany had been left "captive" and was "totally controlled" by Moscow because of a gas pipeline deal with Russian Federation.

Germany spends 1.2 percent of its gross domestic product on defense, while the USA spends 3.5 percent. Why? "After we're at 2 percent, we'll start talking about going higher".

When pressed to explain Trump's claims he credited the president with a "new sense of urgency" among allies to "redouble our efforts" to increase defence spending, but did not report any new cash or time commitments.

"The President said his meeting with the Russian leader may be the easiest" part of his European tour, with massive protests expected over his presence in London.

Trump said he did not think Russian Federation would have invaded Crimea if he had been in the White House at the time. May will be able to remain in power in the wake of a rebellion in her government over Britain's "Brexit" break with the European Union, and the resignation of her foreign secretary Boris Johnson, he had nothing good to say about her chances.

Earlier, Trump strode into NATO's new headquarters to shake hands with leaders - but only after publicly railing against Germany at a breakfast meeting with Stoltenberg.

At present, not even the U.S. spends 4% of GDP on defense with only five - USA, UK, Estonia, Poland, and Greece - out of NATO's 29 members now meeting the agreed defense spending target of 2% GDP set for countries to meet by 2024 in accordance with a 2014 agreement.

What President Trump said about May, Brexit, and 'England'
He also said May's plans are "not the deal that was in the [Brexit] referendum". "I would have done it much differently". Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis both quit the government this week in protest.

THE FACTS: There's no outward sign that Trump's aggressive posturing in recent days has changed much for the alliance other than bruise its veneer of unity.

But by Thursday, leaders from France, Germany and Italy offered no support for Trump's claim that he had wrung new concessions out of the alliance on their military spending. "Not acceptable! All Nato Nations must meet their 2% commitment, and that must ultimately go to 4%!"

"We understand your message, but some people ask themselves, will you be tweeting differently once you're aboard Air Force One?" a Croatian reporter asked.

"I let them know that I was extremely unhappy", he said, but added that the talks ended on the best of terms: "It all came together at the end".

"He's been very nice to me the times I've met him".

Instead, a series of events - a black-tie dinner with business leaders, a meeting with May and an audience with Queen Elizabeth - will happen outside the bustling city, where Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in a verbal battle with Trump. And one of the freedoms we have is freedom of speech and the freedom to express your views.
