Nine thousand police officers and hundreds of soldiers and academics were dismissed from their jobs Sunday, according to the decree published in the state Gazette.

Turkey has been in a state of emergency since the attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July 2016.

The Turkish government has adopted a decree in line with the state of the emergency regime, declared following the 2016 coup attempt, the official Resmi Gazete reported. Turkey says the measures are necessary to combat threats to national security.

The current parliamentary system will end on Monday after constitutional changes were approved in a 2017 referendum. Erdogan promised to lift the state of emergency rule following last month's election, in which he was re-elected with 53% of the vote.
