Turkey's new finance chief, Erdogan's son-in-law, vows to bring inflation down

Turkey's highest electoral body on Wednesday certified the results of last month's parliamentary and presidential elections, paving the way for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to continue his 15-year rule with expanded powers.

Erdogan's re-election at the June 24 polls marked Turkey's transition to an executive presidential system of government, doing away with the prime minister's post, among other changes. Erdogan is expected to name a streamlined cabinet of 16 ministers on Monday evening after a ceremony at the presidential palace for more than 7,000 guests, including Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who is wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court.

Indeed, if the composition of the Cabinet is analyzed, it is possible to see that with the exception of Abdulhamit Gul, Berat Albayrak and Suleyman Soylu, all the ministers are new. He was taken hostage during the night of the failed military coup in July 2016, which was blamed on US-based opposition cleric Fethullah Gulen.

And unlike the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in May 2017 - where the president famously shoved Montenegro's Prime Minister Dusko Markovic out of the way so he could be in the front row of the group photo - other leaders gave him plenty of space and he stood alone, front and center.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has signed off on a series of changes to the way the central bank's top leaders are chosen, signalling he plans to follow through on a pre-election pledge to tighten his grip on monetary policy under the new executive presidency.

"With the power granted to us by the new presidential system, we will get quicker and stronger results".

Under the new system, the president forms government, appoints ministers, vice-presidents and high-level bureaucrats.

"But amidst a host of bilateral issues, mismatched expectations and mounting mutual anger in Turkey and Washington, a lasting reset will prove hard to pull off", Danforth warned.

But Erdogan faces immediate challenges posed by Ankara's faltering bid to join the European Union and tensions between the United States and its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally.

The post of prime minister has been scrapped and the president will now be able to select his own cabinet, regulate ministries and remove civil servants, all without parliamentary approval.

She'd timed it so her victims died when she wasn't at work - because she dreaded having to deal with grieving family members. Police zeroed in on Kuboki after analyzing hospital worker uniforms, finding that only hers carried traces of the chemical.

Likewise, the departure of market-friendly ministers such as Mehmet Simsek, the well regarded former deputy prime minister, and Naci Agbal, previously the finance minister, has also undermined confidence.

Erdogan announced the new cabinet hours after he was sworn in.

The AKP failed to win a majority in parliament, taking 294 of the 600 seats, meaning it will need its allies in the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), which has 49 seats, to ensure a majority.

Under the new system, the counting of terms starts afresh, which means he starts his first five-year term on Monday.
