What President Trump said about May, Brexit, and 'England'

US President Donald Trump and Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May held a meeting on Friday at Chequers the prime minister's country residence near Ellesborough northwest of London

British Prime Minster Theresa May and U.S. President Donald Trump walk across the courtyard at Blenheim Palace, where they are attending a dinner with specially invited guests and business leaders, near Oxford, Britain, July 12, 2018.

Fox News contributor Nigel Farage said President Trump's "bombshell" comments about British Prime Minister Theresa May's handling of Brexit stunned the political establishment in the United Kingdom.

Trump said the interview published by the Sun omitted his praise of May, and that his staff had taped the interview: "It's called fake news and we solve a lot of problems with the good old recording instrument".

The long-awaited document proposes keeping Britain and the European Union in a free market for goods, with a more distant relationship for services.

Johnson is actually remaining in government as a member of Parliament despite resigning as foreign secretary.

Mr Trump has sparked a backlash from UK politicians after telling The Sun the PM's Brexit plan would "probably kill" a UK-US trade deal.

Trump is meeting May for a working lunch before meeting the Queen for tea and a likely round at his Scottish golf course.

As he began a four-day visit to Britain on Thursday, Trump, a major supporter of Brexit, told The Sun that he had advised May to go about leaving the European Union in a different way but was ignored.

Donald Trump again says he’s a ‘very stable genius’ at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit
Earlier, Trump strode into NATO's new headquarters to shake hands with leaders - but only after publicly railing against Germany at a breakfast meeting with Stoltenberg.

He also said May's plans are "not the deal that was in the [Brexit] referendum".

"I would have done it much differently". Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis both quit the government this week in protest.

When asked about the comments, May's spokesman said she was looking forward to sitting down with Trump to talk him through the negotiating stance.

"Whats clear about some of things he has said and some of his policies is many people in this country find them objectionable".

Trump also singled out Germany and its chancellor Angela Merkel for criticism, a day after saying Berlin had become a "captive of Russia" because of a gas pipeline deal and should be paying more for defense.

"I think he's a great representative for your country", he said.

When asked if there was any way for relations with the Kremlin to improve while Russian Federation continues to occupy Crimea, which it annexed 2014, Trump said: "Yes, I think so".

During the meeting and press conference at Chequers, tens of thousands of anti-Trump protesters packed Regent Street in London on their way to Trafalgar Square under fierce sunshine, carrying banners criticising the US President's personality and politics.

"I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London".

"I know Londoners are resolutely opposed to the politics of fear and despair". I haven't been there in a long time. "I think you are losing your culture".

He added: "You have a mayor who has done a awful job in London". Look at what is going on in London.

The balloon was authorised by Khan, who has crossed swords with Trump several times after the president posted factually incorrect messages over a series of terror attacks in Britain in 2017.

"No, if they do that I would say that that would probably end a major trade relationship with the United States". Immigration was "very bad for Europe", he said, citing recent terror attacks.

"She said: 'Don't worry it's only the press.' I thought that was very professional".

'I am just saying I think he would be a great prime minister.

Trump Says 'No Problem' In NATO, Touting Allies' Spending Pledges
