Wimbledon relaxes cellphone ban ahead of World Cup semifinal

Novak Djokovic is hoping to see a full court for the men’s final but the lure of football may be too much to resist

It's not all doom and gloom for the wider Wimbledon tournament though; 17 per cent of internet users state they are actually more engaged in the tennis this year as a direct result of the World Cup also taking place.

Victory would put England, champions in 1966, in the final for only the second time and the match is likely to overlap with the men's final, which would normally last longer than two hours.

England face Croatia in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday in Russian Federation (19:00 kick-off), with the victor playing France or Belgium on Sunday (16:00).

Fans on the grounds of the All-England Club watch the World Cup quarterfinal between England and Sweden on their cellphones.

The final will be played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. "We have free public Wi-Fi in many areas, so if people want to watch quietly on their phone or tablet they are able to do so". The rules of entry to the grounds of SW19 had previously stated that devices "must be switched off in and around the courts of play", although the rules appear to have been relaxed with England on the verge of reaching an historic final.

"Our attitude is that if people aren't affecting other people's enjoyment of the tennis, if they have it on silent or are listening on an earphone, then that is fine", Richard Lewis, the club's chief executive, told The Guardian.

Moreover, Lewis said the All England Club would not erect TV screens on the grounds so ticket holders could watch the World Cup, nor will they use the existing oversize screen on Henman Hill behind Court No. 1 for any goal other than tennis.

"Saturday was one of the most special days I can remember at the championships. We had superb tennis going on and we were benefiting from modern technology where people were able to follow the football, enjoy it, without disturbing other people", said Lewis.

Wimbledon's big screen hasn't shown any England games since Euro 1996. "They'll hear every point, Wow, Love-15, 15-30", the Swiss said with a smile. The players [at the World Cup] are going to look up in the crowd and not understand what's going on at Wimbledon!
