YouTube to highlight stories from reputable news sources when news breaks

YouTube's role in promoting conspiracy theories has flared up in recent months. YouTube removed the clip within a few hours, citing violation of its policy on harassment and bullying.

YouTube has been facing backlash for more than a year related to hateful and inappropriate videos as well as fake news on its site.

Similar to Facebook's attempts to fight fake news by adding information about publishers and articles to News Feed, YouTube said it is will add context to search results about breaking news topics to help people quickly see if a video is from a trustworthy source.

In the coming weeks, Google will begin showing snippets of news articles in the search results for breaking news events, complete with a link to the full article.

These tests are being run in 25 markets across the US and Google says that local news has gotten "strong engagement" so far.

Already available in 17 countries including the USA and UK, YouTube's Top News and Breaking News will display videos from known news sources in relevant search results for the former, and as a section on the home page in regards to the latter. YouTube will also work with the Poynter Institute, Stanford University, Local Media Association, and the National Association for Media Literacy Education to support MediaWise to help teens develop media literacy skills. The Top News and Breaking News features are already available in 17 countries, including the U.S., the U.K., France, Italy, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa and Nigeria.
