Former Tour champion Jan Ullrich arrested over alleged attack on escort

CYC ULLRICH

Jan Ullrich, the 1997 Tour de France victor, was arrested early on Friday for allegedly attacking an escort at a Frankfurt hotel.

The former cyclist is known for being the only German to have won the Tour de France in 1997, and also won Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000.

Police said the German - who won the 1997 event and came second to Lance Armstrong several times - could be charged with assault or attempted murder.

Now in custody, Ullrich, 44, was "under the influence of alcohol and drugs" during his arrest, said prosecutor Nadja Niesent.

"It seems Mr Ullrich and an escort women had a dispute and that he attacked her", Lerch said.

"She alerted the hotel staff and they called police". Mr Ullrich said he was only trying to talk to his neighbour.

After spending the night with this woman, the only German victor of the Tour de France hit her and strangled her, authorities said. Lerch said no further details could be given on her condition while police were investigating.

The former pro-cyclist had sought treatment after being detained on Mallorca last Friday over "forceful entry and threats" on his neighbour, German actor and film director Til Schweiger, in Palma de Majorca.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp still expects players to leave
Karius followed that up with a tumultuous pre-season and another comical error against Tranmere Rovers in a friendly. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says it was always inevitable they would have a big spending transfer window.

Schweiger told Bild that Ullrich 'had nearly become a family member but when his wife left him he started taking amphetamines: he would only sleep for two hours.

Ullrich had told German Bild newspaper in an interview earlier this week that he had marriage problems and was emotionally stressed after his wife had made a decision to separate.

"I've done and taken things that I very much regret", Ullrich told Bild, adding: "Out of love for my children, I'm doing therapy now".

"Almost everyone took performance-enhancing substances then".
