Lombok hit by another strong quake

More than a quarter of a million were displaced by a series of earthquakes on Indonesia's Lombok

A strong quake with a magnitude of 6.2 hit Indonesia's Lombok island on Thursday (Aug 9), causing some buildings to collapse, according to witnesses and the Southeast Asian nation's meteorology and geophysics agency.

Facebook has been forced to apologise after users posting about Sunday's deadly quake on the Indonesian island of Lombok saw their messages trigger animations of celebratory balloons and confetti.

The aftershock comes after Sunday's devastating 6.9-magnitude natural disaster, which relief agencies said had wiped out entire villages in the worst-hit regions of northern and western Lombok.

The updated figure was announced shortly after a strong aftershock shook the island, where tens of thousands of people have been left homeless.

Reuters witnesses reporting on the aftermath of Sunday's quake in the north of the island said buildings and walls that had already been weakened collapsed, and people ran out onto roads even as rocks tumbled down from hillsides.

This most recent aftershock happened on Thursday and had a magnitude of 5.9.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said people ran onto roads in panic and buildings were damaged, causing more "trauma" for people on the island.

Aid agencies say the number is likely to increase dramatically as they gain access to the worst-hit parts of the island.

The island is a popular holiday spot and thousands of tourists have now left.

At a shelter in hard-hit Kayangan, new mother Rusnah, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said she needed basic supplies for her children.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it had set up 10 mobile clinics in the north of the island.

But some evacuees have complained of being ignored or experiencing long delays for supplies to arrive at shelters.

'People are always saying they need water and tarps, ' he said, adding they were also looking for people with untreated injuries.

"More than 3000 people have been evacuated in three days". "I know stay in the evacuation spot", she said. More than 1,000 schools have been damaged, the organization said.
